As the first Gospel in the Christian canon and the first book of the New Testament, Matthew has attracted significant attention. It contains the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord’s Prayer, the Beatitudes and End Times parables and prophecies. It describes the nature of the kingdom of heaven.

講道的目的是要幫助會眾把經文中由上帝而來的生活原則，應用於其處境之中，使上帝的子民合乎上帝的旨意，使上帝得著榮耀；換句話說，是要將古代的經文應用於現代受眾的生活之中。這就是傳道人的使命—要將「當時當地」的經文，翻譯成為「此時此地」受眾聽得懂的語言，同時具有權威性和相關性。
